Teaching Philosophy and Experiences
Why do I want to teach? From a young age, I enjoyed helping others, it brought me joy and a sense of purpose in life. Throughout my high school experience, I worked with students with special needs in and out of the classroom. After graduating high school, I felt called to become an educator. As somebody who was fortunate enough to receive a quality K-12 education, I recognize that not everyone is as fortunate and I want to be able to help people achieve greatness. |
Long Term Substitute TeachingDuring the spring of 2022, I was offered a two month long position as a third grade general education teacher. I was able to take this position through the end of the school year. This position offered me a lot of insight on being the lead teacher in a classroom. I was able to learn more about my strengths and weaknesses in the classroom and have been able to build on both during and after this experience. Through my long term subbing position, I was able to implement engaging lessons and teach my third grade students in a way that made sense to them. Although I only taught these children for a brief time, I was able to form connections with many of them and learned so much from them.

Pre Student TeachingIn January of 2022 I began my first internship, pre-student teaching, under the guidance of a mentor teacher in a fifth grade classroom. Through my pre-student teaching experience, I have gained a significant amount of knowledge to assist me in my future career as an urban educator. I have been able to lead parts of lessons, lead small group instruction, attend school professional development and meetings, and much more. This semester has taught me the value of experience in the classroom. While I have learned a great deal in my course work, I have learned many more skills in the classroom through this experience, such as classroom management and the importance of small group instruction.

Philippines - Volunteer ExperienceIn the summer of 2018, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Wayne State's International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ). Through IVHQ, I traveled to the Philippines with other Wayne State students for two weeks. During those two weeks, I was able to co-teach with another volunteer in an elementary school. While in the Philippines, our entire group stayed in a rural area, sharing the lives of families and customs of the people of Palawan. This experience was humbling to say the least. During my time in Palawan, I learned how fortunate I am to live and learn the way I do in the United States. The life and teaching skills I learned on this trip are unmatched. That trip truly helped make me the person and educator I am today.
